HISTORY
Rhombus Media was founded in 1979 at York University’s Film Department, when Niv Fichman and Barbara Willis Sweete created Opus One, Number One, a documentary short that established the company’s musical direction. Larry Weinstein joined the team shortly after, and in 1985, the trio received their first Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short for Making Overtures: The Story of a Community Orchestra. In the years that followed, Fichman, Sweete, and Weinstein produced and directed numerous performance films and documentaries, earning widespread international acclaim for their works, including Yo-Yo Ma: Inspired by Bach, The War Symphonies: Shostakovich Against Stalin, The Planets, September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill, Elizabeth Rex, Pictures on the Edge, Le Dortoir and Concerto.
In 1993, François Girard’s critically celebrated Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould marked a pivotal turning point for the company, blending its performing arts roots with a more dramatic storytelling approach.
A few years later, Rhombus solidified its foray into feature filmmaking with Girard’s follow up film The Red Violin, which earned the company its first Academy Award for Best Original Score. Both films were also recipients of the Genie Award for Best Motion Picture.
Rhombus is now a leading producer of narrative feature films and television series, both in Canada and internationally. Our films have consistently premiered at top-tier festivals around the globe, including Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale, Venice, and TIFF, and have garnered numerous awards at these and other festivals worldwide. In 2016, Sweete and Weinstein amicably departed Rhombus, leaving Fichman to lead the company until now.
