In 19th Century France, Herve Joncour, a married silkworm smuggler, embarks on journeys to Japan to procure his clandestine cargo. During one trip, he becomes captivated by a stunning Japanese woman, the concubine of a local baron. Despite their inability to speak the same language, they forge a deep connection through letters exchanged covertly. Their unspoken affection persists even as the specter of war threatens their fragile bond.
